Linda Simioni found our group on Facebook and when she saw my husband and I were coming to Varese on our recent trip, she arranged to get her family together with ours and Lucas Simionis. We met for pizza Friday night - I think there 13 of us! Lots of eating and talking as usual when Simionis get together!

Linda's parents invited us over for dinner on Sunday so we met again and had a little more time to chat, and, met a few more family members.

Thiene & Sarcedo Simioni families!

We were thrilled when Francesco Simioni organized a Sunday lunch with his family and his brother Roberto's and asked us to join them all. We finally got to meet Giulia, who was/is working in New York. She was our original Facebook connection to this family but she was out of the country last year when we visited. She and I have been "Friends" for a few years now.

Alessandro, Diego, Gloria, Yasmine. Ugo, Vitti. Simionis all. Plus spouses and significant others. And 8 little ones! We feasted on a long, delicious lunch at Agriturismo da Marinela. Elisa and Diego were more available to chat this time (they were the bride & groom last year) but, none of us spoke enough of each others' language to carry on a conversation! Elisa and I chat online often, using translators, and we had to laugh that we could not chat in person! We did share hugs and I was able to meet their baby girl, our newest Simioni!

We have not found a bloodline connection to these families either, but again, our hearts have been joined! There are two new babies since last year as the Simioni tree grows new branches. We discussed the "need" to organize a Simioni del Mondo worldwide festa some day in northern Italy.

All of these families have taken time to show us around their cities and lives. What a treat for Rick and I to experience Italy this way. The REAL Italy -- the many "real" Italies. We enjoy the people and their hospitality. The Italians are friendly people to begin with...then when they find you have Italian heritage you become almost family! And when you have the same last name, well, you ARE family!

We were unable to connect with any Simionis in Cittadella this trip. Even with almost 3 weeks in Veneto. I guess we need to stay longer! :)

Simionis in Veneto!

Rick and I visited Castelfranco Veneto Comune offices again, and did get more information on his grandparents (birthdates) which will take us another branch up the Simioni family tree. I sure would like to find we are related to these wonderful Simionis!

We DID find information on Rick's two aunts who remained in Italy and did not move to the USA when all the other brothers and sisters did. They both married men named Fior. Maria named two of her son's Desiderio and Fortunato! (after Rick's father and uncle; her brothers) One son is still alive and living in Salvatronda, near where Rick's father lived. Had we located them last year we could have met another uncle who passed away in 2010.

With the help of Alice and her father Emanuele Simioni, we made a visit to Alfredo Fior, 87 years old. Without their assistance this would have been difficult, if not impossible, as Alfredo was hard of hearing and spoke dialetto!

Meeting him was emotional for us. After years of searching, he is our first relative. He has sons and grandsons, and since we did not have any family history with us at that time, we are going to follow-up with a letter and photos when we return to the USA.

City records show Rick's other aunt apparently moved to Como, and we plan to contact that Comune office in the future to see whom we can find. This is all quite like a giant puzzle, with many missing pieces!

Meeting Mattia Simioni, who was our first Castelfranco Veneto connection on Facebook over 2 years ago. Last year he was working in Greece when we visited.
He is Alice's cousin, and the son of Germano.
The 3rd Simioni brother/family is Gabriele.

We also had an afternoon to enjoy with the family of Oscar Simioni from Cartigliano. This time our English/Italian translator, his daughter Silvia, was not available as she is studying in Finland at this time. We managed with the help of her sister Federica, and Rick's improved Italian language skills! (His one year of university studies this past winter and spring did pay off!)

Simioni of Montreal & Salvatronda

Last year we were Salvatronda (Castelfranco Veneto) to search for Rick's father's family. We had already become Facebook friends with Mattia, Alice, and Elisa Simioni from Castelfranco.

Alice's father volunteered to do some investigating before we arrived and found birth records of Desiderio!

He also found Sergio Simioni, who is from Salvatronda, had a father named Desiderio, and an uncle Fortunato, just as Rick did. We wonder if their fathers were cousins and named after important family members.

Sergio mentioned he has family in Montreal Canada, and mentioned Lisa and Mario. Well, I already knew of Lisa and Mario because of our Facebook group "The Simionis of the World". We were aware Lisa is in Montreal, and, took special note that Mario played professional hockey, NHL farm club I think, since Rick is a big hockey fan. (Mario is now in Denmark coaching a successful hockey team.)

And it became even more interesting as in Alice's home they have a hockey stick signed by Mario on their basement wall! When I asked Alice if she was related to him she replied no, he was just playing hockey in town one time and when she told him her name was also Simioni he gave her the stick!

Lisa and I exchanged a few emails and she spoke to her parents. Now she writes me that her parents will be in Castelfranco! Her mother Annamaria and I are now corresponding. We arrive late on the 8th of September, they return to Canada on the 10th. We have planned to meet, with Sergio, on the 9th!

It's a small world after all!

Dual Citizenship: Italy and ___________

Two years ago Rick and I looked into obtaining dual citizenship based on his father and my grandparents being born in Italy. We did not get very far once we found out that Rick's father became American before Rick was born. That would require that he go back to grandparents and we did not have enough information.

While our trip to Castelfranco Veneto last May (2010) provided some information, we ran into dead ends on the grandparents. Just today Rick wrote a follow-up email to Castelfranco asking for more details on his aunts who remained there, as well as his grandparents. Hopefully we'll get something to go with when we are there this Fall.

Meanwhile, this afternoon, Trevor Simioni from Canada, posted on our "The Simionis of the World, and descendants" Facebook page, asking about dual citizenship. AND, this evening, the Italian Citizenship for Americans group on Facebook posted this helpful article:
"Strategy for Collecting Required Records".

I guess this all means we are meant to get serious about dual citizenship! :) I'm thinking Rick and I should do it, and then our son Julian could also. It would give him the opportunity to work anywhere in the European Union.

Last year I had some "Simioni del Mondo" t-shirts made up for gifts which we took to Italy.
I also sent two to our Facebook group creators Tania and Stephan Simioni in Montreal as my thanks for getting our group started.

And, there are also 3 in Brazil as I sent them to Cris Simioni and her brothers last Christmas.

I'm getting ready to order more, and wonder if any Simionis would like to buy one. The shirts cost me about $20 US, and then I would have to add mailing costs. I can bring some to Italy this Fall!

Ciao! Hola! Ola! Bonjour! Oi! Hello!

Today we have had a lot of communication on Facebook with our group "The Simionis of the World.... and descendants!"

Stephan Simioni, from Montreal, Ottawa, Canada, started the group back in 2008, and inspired me to begin this blog for all of us. Facebook required that he update the group to their new format, and that caused many of us to respond and greet each other. It's fun to see who is out there!

Benvenuti! Two new additions to our "family forest" -- Vivian Trapani, Paola Bortolin

Recently I've received contact from two Simioni women. It's always fun to make new friends!

First, Vivian Trapani, from a Simioni family in Ottawa, Canada.
As it turns out she is related to Lisa and Mario Simioni, whom I already had contact with, and, they are are related to Sergio Simioni in Salvatronda (Castelfranco Veneto) Italy. Rick and I met Sergio last year when Alice Simioni and her father, Emanuele Simioni, took us to a Salvatronda church to find the baptismal records of Rick's father, Desiderio Simioni. Sergio's father was also a Desiderio Simioni from Salvatronda, born around the same time (1895).
Whew. Both had uncles named Fortunato. This family is the closest to a chance of finding relatives, so far.

Anyway, we are both working to find a family connection. I'll post some of her family info if she desires.

Rick and I are heading back to Italy in a couple of months and hope to a confirmed connection to some relative. Of course, even if we do not, we are looking forward to visiting with all our new Simioni friends!

Today I received an email from Paola Bortolin, who tells me her Simioni relatives are from Loria, Italy, which is just north of Castelfranco Veneto. She didn't mention where she is currently living, but with her permission, I'll add that info soon.

UPDATE 15 July 2011: Paula found she is related to Angela Simioni (Family #53!) Last I tried to connect with Angela (2009) the email message was returned. We'll try again. This is so wonderful for these two women!

The origin of the Simioni name / L'origine del nome di Simioni

This information is from a wall plaque my husband Rick's sister, Annette, bought us many years ago. Now I see the company has a website so maybe info is there too. At this moment the website will not open.

The plaque reads:

The Italian surname Simioni is of patronymic origin, derived from the name of the father of the progenitor of this family. In this instance Simioni comes from the Hebrew name "Shimeon", probably derived from the word "shama", with the meaning of "listening", in the sense of "God has listened", referring to those parents whose prayers to God to grant them a baby were listened to. The Greeks and Romans adopted this name with the spelling Symeone. With the spread of Christianity in the Western world this name became very popular, since there are several biblical figures so called.

Patronymics are the most common type of surnames, so in the case of the first name Simone we also have a surname form with the same spelling which can be found all over Italy, because it originated in several places at the same time.

Variants of Simone are Simioni, Simeone, Simon, Simo, Simeo, Simonella, Simonetto, Simonino, etc, and the compound form Simon Pietro.

Records like "Rietstap's Armarial General" mention only one family called Simioni from the city of Florence but we have no name of any bearers from this house.

Simioni del Mondo/Italia! Lucas & Sergio and families

Lago Maggiore Area Simionis

Our last "Giro di Simioni" stop was in the northern lakes district. We stayed at a B&B in Ispra.

Many Simionis are Facebook friends with Lucas Simioni. After Stephan & Tania Simioni in Montreal Canada, (who started "Simionis of the World" group on Facebook), and Cris Simioni from Brazil, Lucas has been our longest "Simioni del Mondo" friend, and our most frequent communicator. ;)

Lucas and his wife, Elena Contini, drove us to beautiful locations around the lakes and in spite of continued rain, we found pockets of daylight, allowing us to enjoy the sites. It's so fun to meet people we've only known online! Such warm welcomes we received.

We met Lucas' parents and brothers, aunts & uncles, and nieces & a nephew. And boy did we get to eat! Lucky us! Silvano is a pasty chef! They all kept cooking for us! It was amazing! Grazie Lucas, Elena, Silvano & Mery -- I gained 5 pounds! ;)

We also were able to spend a little time in Cavona with Lucas' cousin, Sergio, his family and friends. We didn't go hungry there either! Grazie Franca! Sergio and I agreed it felt like we had "jumped into our computer" -- standing there with our "virtual friends" we have made on Facebook.

I believe Silvano says he has some relatives in Bassano del Grappa, that we'll have to meet next time! Who knows who we'll be able to connect!

This "Giro di Simioni Italia" was truly an awesome experience after spending a lifetime not knowing there were any other Simionis! Even though we did not find relatives, we had a fantastic time. We could not have imagined how wonderful all everyone would treat us! It's been my pleasure to meet, and maybe introduce you to, some of our Simioni del Mondo! Rick's father, Desiderio Simioni (1895 - 1965) born in Castelfranco Veneto, would be so pleased.

Finding Desiderio - in Salvatronda

We did it! We found records of Rick's father, Desiderio Simioni, in very old local church ledgers.

Today in Salvatronda (Castelfranco Veneto) Italy, we went to the local church, Santa Maria Assunta di Salvatronda, and found records of Desiderio's baptism. They match information from the city hall for his birth. It was emotional for everyone there as we carefully searched through the ledgers together. To think Rick's father was baptized here 115 years ago, walked these streets, and maybe tried to imagine his future. Now we try to imagine his past.

With the help of Alice and her father, Emanuele Simioni, we met Sergio Simioni (above, left. Priest in center) who's father was also a Desiderio Simioni, and who also had a brother Fortunato Simioni, same as Rick's father and uncle. It's possible their grandparents were related. If so, we are related to the Simionis in Montreal: Lisa and family. We'll be following up when we return.

There are so many things we learned, like family nicknames (because there are so many Simionis here). Rick's family is part of the Cecconato branch. (translates to "born thin".)

Meanwhile, the Simioni families in the Castelfranco area have adopted us! We been treated to family dinners, shown us around, picked us up when it was pouring rain (Often!!), and just have been fun to meet. They are family group #12. They even through me a birthday party down one of their basements! And they have family in California near us! We have not been able to connect with them as direct relatives, wouldn't it have been wild to find out in Italy that the relatives we were searching for were just an hour or two away from our home?*

Mattia Simioni was my first Facebook contact in Castelfranco, and he led me to Alice and her family. Unfortunately, Mattia was in Greece when we visited.

*Update Summer 2010: Alice Simioni came to California to visit her Simioni relatives and us. We had a wonderful time showing her around San Diego, sharing classic American movies, food, and customs. And we met her Simioni relatives who live just an hour north of us. We plan to do some additional research, and fully expect to find we are related. Here's a picture of the California Simionis.

Giro di Simioni - Cartigliano and Cittadella

Now here's a Simioni family we have met before! Last year they drove down to meet us in Rome! Time they took us to Venice for lunch and showed us around their hometown of Cartigliano -- although the rain began to fall (and we ended up with 17 days of rain!) With Silvia as our translator again, we managed an afternoon in Venice and an unbelievable lunch. Silvia and I have been very active Facebook friends for over a year, and we have Skyped with her family so we felt like old friends by this trip!

Rick and I have been on our personal "Giro di Simioni" for a week now and it has been fascinating!

Milan to Thiene to Cartigliano to Castelfranco to Cittadella so far. I'll update here more later but want to capture some of today's events while my brain still has some details.

With the help of Gabriele Simioni of Castelfranco Veneto, we made a little trip to Cittadella today. We wanted to see Stradella Simioni and meet Carlo Alberto Simioni.

Carlo met us for caffe and with our limited knowledge of each others language, we still managed. Carlo told us some background on the Simioni name and showed us the family history book, which dates back to the 15th century! He also showed us a local phone book as Simioni is the 2nd most popular name in Cittadella! Rick gets a good laugh when he explains that for the first 55 years of his life he thought he might be the last remaining Simioni in the world!

After posting these photos on Facebook, Cherie Simioni (Chicago, USA) and Sandra Simioni (Argentnia/FloridaUSA) found out they are related to each other, and Carlo! ...and now Marco (Paris) also!

Marco Simioni (in Paris) tells me this Simioni history book is the one he has been telling me about. He and his father have both contributed to it, and his father was working on a 2nd one when he passed away just a few months ago. So, now I'm waiting to see if Marco is also related to Carlo. I don't think we are, but we'll see! Tomorrow we visit Salvatronda to look for records of Rick's father, Desiderio Simioni, son of Giovanni Simioni. All these Simionis, but so far, no relatives for Rick....

I did not think it would be THIS much later, but here I am finally.

Giulia Simioni was one of my earliest Simioni del Mondo Facebook friends. I remember being disappointed when I found out she had attended the University of Michigan while we lived there.
She had me become "friends" with her father, Roberto, also.
And then she introduced me to Elisa Lorenzin who was planning to marry cousin Diego Simioni, and now here we were meeting this large family of Simionis. (Except Giulia, who was working in New York City!)

We met so many in the family in such a short time, we wish we could have stayed a few days longer and got to know more of them. Unfortunately we had to leave the morning after the wedding.

Giro dei Simioni e Italia 2010! Family in Gorla Minore and Belluna, Italy?

We are so excited! We just booked our long awaited trip to northern Italy to visit Rick's father's hometown of Castelfranco, Veneto!

All our research for Simioni del Mondo started in effort to find relatives of Desiderio Simioni, Rick's father, born in 1895. When we started we had never met another Simioni, other than Rick's uncles who are now all deceased. We had no idea there were so many in Italy, and around the world!

We plan to spend time in Castelfranco/Salvatronda to go through church records and hopefully re-find Desiderio's sister's family, or any other relatives. Her name was Amabile Simioni. Their parents: Giovanni Simioni and Anna Cecchetto*. More family details: simionis.blogspot.com/-usa-california

Today we also connected with cousins in the mid-west USA, in the State of Michigan, where we are from and were told we have Italian cousins in Gorla Minore, north of Milan. We are trying to get more details, but for now, their names may be: Luigina, Renata, Ricardo, and Cesare Simioni. And, we found we may have cousins in Belluna, Italy! Unfortunately, we don't have enough information to confirm.

If we don't find them it will still be fun. We have many Simionis to see -- We have met (online) many nice and fun Simionis! It will still be an awesome experience for Rick to walk the streets of his father.

If I have this correct, sisters Jennifer, Barbara, and Silvia, are daughters of Gabriele, and from San Marco di Resana which is just 5 km from Castelfranco Veneto.

Then there is Alice, also a cousin of this family, daughter of Emanuel. Alice and I have been corresponding, and Emanuel is going to help us try to find connections through his priest and church records! Alice, do you have siblings?

They are relatives of Mattia & Elisa, Gabriele being a brother of their father. So, I'll combine them as part of Simioni Family #12.

As always, I look forward to learning grandparents, aunts & uncles. Nonni, zie, e zii -- (I'm practicing my beginners Italian!)

For selfish reasons I hope to find out more of all Castelfranco area Simioni families as we plan to come to the area in May, and search for relatives of my husband's father, Desiderio and his sister & Amablie, and their parents Anna (or Angela), and Giovanni. Desiderio came to the Canada/USA in 1920's. His sister Amabile did not, so there may be cugini still in the area!

While doing more searching for our ancestors, I have found information on Canadian Simionis. Rick's father, Desiderio, and uncle, Fortunato, and maybe other relatives of ours, came through Canada. We have found another Fortunato whom we do not think is Rick's uncle. Maybe he stayed in Canada?

We found a Francesco Simioni (I think -- the small, old, print is hard to read), born November 5, 1936, who married Sidonio Horvath (again, I think) born in Austria. Married in Ottawa, Canada, 1965.

Another marriage in Ottowa 1968:

Linda Carol Simioni, born November 17, 1946 in Montreal. (Occupation: Spinster!!!! LOL!)

to Luciano Giovanni Sperotto, born December 14, 1934, in Treviso. (Occupation: Bachelor - that sounds better!)

A 3rd marriage in Ottowa 1968:

Mario Simioni, born January 1, 1941.

to Anna Marie Gerometta, born January 18, 1942, in Corona (?) Italy.

[Could this be Mario the hockey player? Sister Lisa?]

Other documents:

A Simioni in 1921 came into Canada on a ship and was shown as going to stay with a friend, Angelo Minelloi (or Menelloi...) in Halifax, NC. but I think it means NS for Nova Scotia.

Simionis meet Simionis! Rome December 2009

My family flew from California, USA, to Rome last month and were able to meet some Simionis!

While we looked forward to meeting Daniela and Riccardo who both live and work in Rome, that was not able to happen.

Meanwhile, Silvia Simioni was somehow able to convince her parents to make the 7 hour trip from Veneto to meet us just for a day! Oscar & Annalisa, drove down with Silvia and her sister Federica and we met for a favoloso lunch in Trastevere. In addition to a great meal, we shared stories and some family background, then took an evening stroll around Rome. Although Rick and I have been learning Italian, we all kept Silvia busy as she was the only one fluent in both Italian and English. We talked for hours! We had fun! It was such a pleasure to spend the time with them.

It was fun chatting with Romina on Facebook today! She is from La Paz, Argentina, and, like many of us, has never met other Simionis except family.

She knows some English which was good, since I don't know Spanish except what Google Translator can tell me! (Hey, it's enough for now that I'm learning l'italiano!)

She told me her grandfather came from Rome. That is a first. Everyone outside of Italy so far has ancestors who came from northern Italy: Padova to Venice area.

Today I sent a birthday wish to Marco in Paris (Sept 5th is his birthday).

I was happy to receive a very nice response, AND to learn from him that his father, from Cittadella, has been working on the Simioni family tree also, and is making a book! Hopefully, many of us will be able to connect our families some day!

It is interesting to me that I learned many italiani do not research ancestors but that it is because their families have always resided in italia. That makes sense to me. Those of us whose ancestors left italia and came to other countries are very interested in learning where and when they came from. Do you agree?

My grandfather Jimmy Fortunato Simioni came from Italy and arrived in Montreal around 1915, he was 12 years old.
My father was Carlo Simioni he had 2 brothers and 4 sisters;

A lot of them are deceased...

I don't know the history of the Simioni family, I believe I was too young to ask questions at that time, and also my parents are separated.

I have not been able to keep up with ALL the Simionis I have met online, nor blogged about them, so I thought I'd quickly post the names of those I have connected with so far. My spreadsheet of names keeps growing. On it I have tried to add a column of ancestors/relatives names anyone has mentioned so that if we are looking for a connection we might find the name.

Other than finding families #3 and 7 are cousins, we have found no direct relations... but we will continue searching as everyone's ancestors lead back to Veneto area of Italy.

My name is Sylvia Simioni and I live in Miramar, Florida, USA and I will turn eighteen on January 28 next year. As I stumbled upon your website, I was astonished. You see, I do not know anyone with my last name; I never met my father. So this is very exciting!

I am sorry that I have no information to give about my descendants, but I was hoping if perhaps you can help me find them and other living relatives.

I also noticed on your page that there is a Richard Simioni (#24) living in West Palm Beach (which is only ONE county away from me) and I am wondering if perhaps you can contact him so I may ask if he knows my father.

The only thing I know about my father is his name: Rodney Simioni. If you have information about him, it would be much appreciated if you had any information about him.

I was doing a quick ‘Google’ of the Simioni tree (during my lunch-break!) It’s amazing what there is on the world wide web!! I happened across the website and I am quite delighted that we all seem to have a common ancestry! No mention however is made of the Southern African connection with Ormelle Italy. My father Renzo and his brother Domenico came out to the former Southern Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe) in the mid to late 1950’s with the construction of the Kariba dam and town. My grandfather was Narciso Simioni (after whom I am named). My father is one of nine siblings.

I visited the Ormelle family in 1985 meeting with Aunts Adda, Gemma and Zio Claudio (?) also Carlito (Carlo) and his wife Eddie (both in Lausanne now) – I can get more details of this family line from my Father when I next speak with him. I know there is an uncle Mario in South America!

My father (Renzo) still resides in Harare (Zimbabwe) and is still very involved with the local Italian community. My uncle Mino unfortunately died a while back (having emigrated to South Africa) - however the family name is continued with Willa his son.

Up until 7 years ago my family and I lived in Pretoria South Africa. We now reside on the outskirts of Chester, North West England. I note that there are other Simioni’s here in the UK – perhaps it would be good to make contact?

My husband/marito*, Rick, and I almost booked a trip to Rome for August. There were great airfare sales last week. It still could happen, but it got me to thinking. Do we have any Simionis in Rome? I don't think I've found any, yet there are several people from Rome who have looked at this blog (according to the "map of recent visitors" history).

Since my husband's Simioni family mostly immigrated to or were born in Michigan, just one State east of Illinois we find it amazing to know after all this time there were other Simionis not that far from us right in the USA! I'm a bit new at this, but I discovered the Simioni blog (from Facebook, actually), and tried to post my Simioni heritage there. For some reason, the blog or my computer would not cooperate !

Anyway, I am a Simioni descendant by way of Winterthur-Zurich, Switzerland...

My father married my mother Ilse Isleif (a very rare German name, by the way; she is deceased) who was born in Winterthur, Switzerland.

Her mother - my grandmother - was Liberta Isleif (nee' Simioni), and Liberta's parents were Bonifacio and Emirene Simioni (nee' Malagoli; 1885-1966). They moved to Switzerland from Cittadella sometime after Liberta was born (1906-08?), but before WW1.

My great-grandfather Bonifacio was born in 1874. His father was Valentino Simioni, and Valentino's father was Augusto Antonio Simioni. Unfortunately, the "tree" I have in Excell does not list any of their siblings, just the direct line to my nonna Liberta.

So, there's a Simioni branch in northern Switzerland to this day. (I've got some stories I can share sometime about them, too:).

We have found our first family connection!

Silvia Simioni, (Family #7 from Cartigliano Italia), spent the afternoon with her nonni who helped her with details of her ancestors. In the process she has discovered she is cousins with Lucas, Massimiliano, Cristian, and their cousin Sergio! (Family #3, Italy)

I'm awaiting her details and will post them here. (see update below)

I am now more sure than ever that we will someday make a connection with Simionis outside of Italy!!

Welcome Richard V. Simioni, West Palm Beach, Florida, USA! Simioni family #24. His grandfather is the Simioni of Simioni furniture in Italy! So, we've finally made ONE connection here. Still, no family-to-family connection, but I still am confident we will!

When I first got involved with "Simionis of the World" group on Facebook that Stephen (Montreal, Canada) started, my husband Rick was surprised to find any other Simionis in North America. As you all know by now, there are a bunch of us! and molto molto in Italy!

What has surprised my husband the most is that we found another Rick Simioni! Well, now we have TWO Rick Simionis (USA & Canada), a Richard Simioni (here, USA), and a Ricardo Simioni (Italy)! Update: add one more -- this Richard's father is also Richard! We now have more Richard/Rick Simionis than my husband thought there were ANY Simionis west of the Atlantic! :-)

Richard, I'm sorry we didn't "meet" sooner as we might have been able to actually meet in person a couple of weeks ago on our trip to Florida!

I hope you will be able to send me some names of your family members to post and add to my Simioni spreadsheet! ...and maybe a family photo or two?

You mentioned to me your relatives own a furniture company, is that the one in Italy that I blogged about below in another posting?

Just thought I'd send these pictures of Rick & I on vacation:

We are at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, USA, as one stop on our trip. We are on a month-long "Sea to Shining Sea" trip across America. Leaving from the Pacific Ocean and California, by the Saguaro cacti of Arizona, through the deserts of New Mexico, 3 days to drive through the long flat lands of oil wells and longhorns in Texas, followed by water-logged bayous in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Then finally to beach cities, alligators, and swamps in Florida and the Atlantic Ocean.... all the way down to Key West.

Then, back again. 6,400 miles/10,300K. Here's a link of the route: MAP

Anyway, thought of all of you especially while dining at "Tutto Italia" restaurant. All of the staff throughout "Italy" are from Italy (same with the other "countries".) One of the girls in the gift shop is from Padova!!!! How about that!?!?!?

We are really looking forward to returning to the REAL Italy in 2010!

HI Nancy,
I know my grandfather was originally from Venice (from what I remember my grandmother telling me) and he was the Simioni. She was a Grilli. I don't think i'm related to any of the Simioni's on the blog but i'm not entirely sure.

So my grandfather was Angelo Simioni he married Mary Grilli and they had two sons Yvanno (Gary) Simioni and Robert Simioni. My father is Robert Simioni and he married my mom Francine Potvin. They had 3 kids, me, my sister Karyn and my brother David. My dad remarried and I have a half sister, Chloe Simioni. My uncle Gary (Yvanno) married Sandra and they have two kids, Micheal Simioni (he's a member of the facebook group that the other Montrealers started) and Alison Simioni. I'm really not sure about everyone's birth years. I'm the only one from my family that no longer lives in Montreal and i'm now on Vancouver Island. Let me know what else you need to know.

I think that pretty much does it for what I know.

It is pretty cool that we are so many... yippee for the internet!

My grandmother’s name is: Amabile Bordignon born on the 18th June 1928 in Belvedere Italy.

Her sisters and brothers names : Zita Bordignon, Letezia Bordignon, Amabile Bordignon ,Giorgio Bordignon, Maria Bordignon, Camillo Bordignon & Silvia Bordignon the youngest sister.

Her Mother’s name was: Giuseppina Poggiana /Bordignon born in Rosa near Bassano Born on 22nd May 1899 and she died on 06 September 19 72. Her father: Angelo Silvestro Bordignon was born on the 27th Dec 1893 born in Belvedere and he died on 02 Feb 1938.

The SIMIONI SIDE: My grandfather’s name was

The Australian fires are only 10km from him, but he is fine.

Our personal family heritage search took two giant steps today!

I found out at dinner that one of our cousins, Frank DiMercurio, (from Michigan, but also now here in California) has visited Castlefranco and met Simioni relatives there! His nonna/grandmother was a Simioni sister of my father-in-law, Desiderio. ...update Feb 14: Frank lost touch with the Castlefranco relatives. Maybe someone looking at the Blog will help us find "our" Simioni relatives???

At the same time, I've "met" Mattia Simioni on Facebook! He is from Castlefranco, Veneto, Italy: the town my husband's father was born in! (or possibly Salvatronda). He says he knows he has some relatives in California!! Update ...March 2, 2010: Alice Simioni, Mattia's cousin in Italy, showed me photos (on Facebook) of their relatives in Thousand Oaks, California USA. And her grandfather was born in Salvatronda, same as Rick's may have been.

We would be so happy to find relatives of Anna (or possibly Angela) and Giovanni Simioni born 1800's (and their children, Desiderio, Gemma, Adele.... see my posting down below.) Grazie!!!

We are getting very close....... the world is feeling smaller every day!

Update 02June2009:
Here is what we found out in the letter dated 1963:

Rick's father, Desiderio, born 1895*, received this letter from his sister Amabile Simioni. She was probably born close to 1900. She writes she is sad to not meet Rick as he is the only male Simioni from their family in the next generation. She mentions Onofrio is the only other male but that it does not look promising for him to have children. We don't know who Onofrio is, nor Angela Simioni, who is also mentioned.

Hello/Ciao from San Diego, California USA!

This posting is one example of how each family can blog about their current and past history to see who is related! If you can only list your father/mother and grandfather/grandmother, that's at least a start!

I am Nancy Simioni, married to Rick Simioni. Our son is Julian and we are all on Facebook. We were all born and raised in the Detroit, Michigan, USA, area. We moved to San Diego, California in 2005. San Diego Map

Rick's heritage goes back to Castelfranco, Veneto, Italy. We would love to identify relatives who still live there or near-by. (update March 2010: possibly Belluna, Italy)

Like most of us outside of Italy, we had no idea there were so many Simionis around the world! We have even found another Rick Simioni! How fun! Note Feb 14: now TWO other Rick Simionis and a Riccardo!

It is not necessary to show every sibling and cousin. What I'd really like for this site is to have everyone trace their family back to the 1800's. which is where I think we will start finding our connections! See if you can find your relatives back that far.

1. Giovanni Simioni married Anna (or maybe Angela) Cechetto (may be spelled Ciecheta, chicetto or ciecheta) Born in Italy in the mid-1800's, most likely in or near Castlefranco. They had about 8 children. We know of 7: Desiderio, Gemma, Adele, Fortunato, Amabile, and Ceasar, and another brother John or Joseph. All born in or near Castlefranco or Salvatronda and came to the USA in the early 1900's.
Amabile -- did NOT come to the USA. We want to find her family near Castelfranco. Possibly a daughter Angela (unknown last name), and a Simioni nephew Onofrio.

Generation #2 (3, 4, 5)
--2. Desiderio, (my husband's father) born 1895, Castelfranco, Veneto, Italy. Immigrated to Canada around 1915, then to Detroit within a few years. Married Ida Gigli. (See photo above.) Their family:

--2. Fortunato, Born in Castelfranco, Veneto, Italy, then Detroit, Michigan, USA. No children.

--2. Giovanni/John/Joseph, is another brother. We cannot confirm if he came to the USA or Canada. He may have worked in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. Children? He may have returned to Canada from the USA or, returned to Italy.
--2. Amabile, did not come to the USA. Born and lived in Castelfranco. She may have had a daughter Angela.

There is a son of one of them named Onofrio whom we found mentioned in a letter from Amabile written in 1963. We do not know of him so we think he lived in Veneto. Angela was also discussed in the note.

We had a wonderful time a few weeks ago when Cristiane Simioni who is from Brazil, flew from New York to California to meet us! We still don't know if we are related, but hopefully, we'll find out someday! She was so much fun I hope we are cousins!

Thank you Stephan and Tania Simioni from Montreal, Quebec, Canada, for starting the "Simionis of the World & Descendants" on Facebook! What a treat it has been for many of us!

I, Nancy Simioni, have been trying to come up with a way to do our giant family tree like Stephan wants too. First we need to organize all of the family history in one spot. I've looked into a couple of options such as MyFamily.com and now opening this blog. This might work as we could have postings for each family and group. I'll try to come up with a system such as I have started below.

Now each family can Post info about themselves if they would like, add pictures, and history. You can send me the information, or ask for permission to post yourself. We may find we are ALL cousins!

I'll be asking a couple of you to translate this into Italian too.

I hope you enjoy this Blog! Postings can be edited, and new ones added any time.

Io, Nancy Simioni, ho provato a trovare un modo per fare il nostro enorme albero genealogico come anche Stephen vuole.
Innanzitutto dovremmo raccogliere tutta la storia della famiglia in un solo posto. Ho valutato un paio di opzioni, come MyFamily.com, e ora sto aprendo un blog lì. Potrebbe funzionare perchè potremmo raccogliere notizie da ogni famiglia e da ogni gruppo. Tenterò di trovare un sistema come ho fatto con il blog.

Ora ogni famiglia può postare informazioni su di sè se lo desidera, aggiungere foto, e la storia. Potete mandarmi il materiale, o chiedermi il permesso così da postarlo voi stessi. Potremmo scoprire che siamo TUTTI cugini!

Chiederò poi a un paio di voi di tradurre il materiale in italiano.
